AICD Implantation

Problems with irregular heart rates, also known as arrhythmia, are becoming more common and are affecting patients of all ages. Several factors can contribute to such heart problems, which can be fatal if not treated effectively and promptly. The AICD, or automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, is a small pacemaker-like device. This device is one of the most effective methods for correcting an irregular heartbeat and monitoring the heart rhythm. It is used in severe or life-threatening arrhythmia cases, as opposed to pacemakers.

The healthy heart clinic is a facility dedicated to addressing all of your heart-related concerns. Our clinic is committed to providing high-quality heart care to all of our patients. Dr. (Col.) Monik Mehta devices like the AICD, cardiac resynchronization devices etc, and has saved the lives of many critically ill patients.

What is AICD device ?

A fast heartbeat can sometimes occur, preventing your heart from supplying enough blood to the rest of your body. These potentially fatal arrhythmias are known as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. These issues typically arise in patients whose heart muscle weakens as a result of diseases such as diabetes. a previous heart attack, and so on. To address such issues, medications and/or an AICD device are used.

The AICD is a battery-powered device implanted in the chest that detects and stops irregular heartbeats. It constantly monitors the heartbeat and, if necessary, shocks the heart to restore normal heart rhythm.

A pacemaker, which is an implanted device used in patients with dangerously slow heartbeats, is not the same as an AICD.

The procedure

The implantation of an AICD device is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia. This procedure is performed by a cardiologist who has received special training in this area. The device is usually inserted through a small incision under your collarbone. The leads (wires) will be connected to your heart via a vein on one end, and the device on the other. Following that, the incision is closed and a local dressing is applied over the incision. The procedure lasts about an hour or two, and you must stay in the hospital for one to two days to recover.
