First is a pulse generator that produces the electric signals to be sent to your heart and second are electrodes connected to the heart chambers to carry the generator signals. Implanting a pacemaker is a minor surgical process that is performed under the influence of anesthesia (usually local) by your cardiologist . The procedure usually last 1- 2 hours. Your cardiologist will use a major vein near your collarbone to install the insulated wires. These wires are inserted into the vein and are taken to the heart using x-ray images for guidance. These are then attached to the heart at the right positions and their other end is connected to the pulse generator machine. The machine is placed near your collarbone under the skin. The incisions are secured with suture and bandage.
Nowadays newer pacemaker devices are inside the heart directly and no additional wires are required . The procedure is done through the leg veins under local anaesthesia and the person is discharged the next day.
