FAQ’s regarding CABG

Q1. What is CABG ?

CABG stands for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting. It is a type of surgery that is used to treat patients with severe coronary artery disease (CAD) and is also known as “open heart surgery “ or “bypass surgery” in layman’s language.

Plaque buildup narrows or obstructs the coronary arteries, which give blood and oxygen to the heart muscle. This is known as coronary heart disease. If the blockage becomes serious enough to cut off blood flow to the heart, it can cause chest pain or even a heart attack.

In CABG surgery, a surgeon takes a healthy blood vessel, usually from the leg or chest, and attaches it to the blocked or narrowed coronary artery, bypassing the blockage and allowing blood to flow around it. This improves blood flow to the heart and can relieve symptoms such as chest pain.

CABG surgery is typically reserved for patients with severe CAD who have not responded to other treatments, such as medication or lifestyle changes. The surgery is  done under general anesthesia, and patients typically stay in the hospital for several days afterward to recover.
